The “Skinny” on Sculptra®, Anti-Aging for the Modern Age

Q: What is Sculptra® Filler?

A: Sculptra® is a collagen stimulation agent, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that has been used for over a decade. Originally indicated for patients with severe fat loss of the face in 1999, Sculptra® received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2009.

Sculptra® is a bio-stimulator, meaning it causes the body to naturally create more collagen over a period of 6-8 weeks.

Q: What areas can be treated with Sculptra®?

A: Since aging is about volume loss of bone, muscle and fat in the face, it is important to understand that re-volumizing shouldn’t be isolated to just the nasolabial folds or a jowl, but globally to the entire face. In the hands of a highly skilled medical provider and artist, Sculptra® can be safely injected to correct shallow to deep lines, contour deficiencies and other side effects of the aging face.  Sculptra® can also be used to soften décolleté (chest) lines and rejuvenate hands.

Q: How long does it last?

A: Sculptra® Aesthetic is FDA approved to last up to 25 months based on clinical trials, however, clinicians are reporting volumization after injection up to 36 months.  Because Sculptra® largely works on your body’s ability to create collagen at the point of injection, results  vary based on patient genetics and lifestyle habits that decrease collagen such as smoking and sun exposure.

Q: Is the treatment painful?

A: Sculptra® is combined with Lidocaine a local anesthetic which makes the procedure very tolerable. Numbing cream or ice can be also be used to assure the patient is comfortable. Most patients report little to no pain at all when receiving Sculptra® and other nonsurgical facial enhancements.

21Q: Can men be treated?

A: Men can achieve the same volumizing benefits as women with Sculptra® Aesthetics. Because men have different cheekbone structure, it is important to seek a highly skilled provider who is familiar with facial anatomy and possesses an artistic eye.

Q: Is there any downtime?

A: As with most non-surgical facial enhancements there is little to no downtime with Sculptra® Aesthetic. Immediately following injection the patient is taught how to massage the areas of injection over the next few days. This allows for proper disbursement of the product.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The amount of Sculptra® Aesthetic needed varies from patient to patient. Most clients start with 1-2 vials at the first session and then return for two more sessions of one vial each. However, a cosmetic consultation will allow the doctor or nurse practitioner to tailor a plan based on the patients desires and budget.

Oh My Aging Hands!

Often our hands are the last area we focus on  yet the first  to show signs of  “wear and tear.” Sun damage, volume loss and thinning skin all play a part in the aging process of our hands. Because our hands are naturally thin, usually exposed to the elements and often overlooked with sunscreen it’s no wonder they can look “old before their time.”

When considering treatments for aging hands we can break them into two categories; resurface and refilling.

handsResurfacing

Resurfacing can be accomplished with topicals, chemical peels and lasers. Topicals like Obagi Clear which contains 4% hydroquinone (HQ) or Skin Medica Lytera which is HQ free are inexpensive ways to lighten dark spots and uneven skin tone. The good news is they really work!

Chemical peels are a second option for lightening sun-damaged skin of the hands. In addition, chemical peels like the Vi Peel or PCA peels can resurface the hands leaving a smoother texture.

Lastly, lasers are an option for hand resurfacing and rejuvenation as well.  A little more costly, high-tech options like Fraxel laser can restore the skin’s luminosity and suppleness with little to no downtime.

Refilling

Since aging is really about volume loss and skin laxity, refilling the hands becomes the most effective treatment for beautiful looking hands. Radiesse® Hand Rejuvenation is quickly becoming one of the most sought after beauty treatments because women are discovering the hands should be addressed along with the face and neck.

Radiesse® is made of tiny calcium microspheres and has an impressive track record for re-volumizing the face. Plus, it has been shown to last up to 12-24 months. Hand rejuvenation is a  quick and virtualy painless procedure that takes about 15 minutes. The hands are numbed, the filler is injected and then gently massaged. Areas of depression, bony prominence and vein protrusion are softened giving the hands a fuller, more healthy look. The Radiesse® then stimulates your own body to produce both collagen and elastin contributing to the long lasting effect.

Juvéderm® Voluma FAQ

Discover the answers to your most common questions on Juvéderm® Voluma XC!

1. What is Juvéderm® Voluma XC?voluma

Juvéderm® Voluma XC is the next generation of fillers from Allergan Cosmetic. Voluma has been on the market since 2005 in Europe and like it’s sister product Juvéderm®, Voluma is made of hyaluronic acid, a sugar that occurs in our body naturally.

2. What is Juvéderm® Voluma XC indicated for?

Juvéderm® Voluma is indicated for volume loss in the mid cheek and central face. Due to fat and bone loss as we age the face can look sunken or hollow. Sun damage and aging further play a part in skin laxity and jowling. Juvéderm® Voluma can be combined with BOTOX®, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus and skin resurfacing to achieve a non surgical facelift. For the younger person, Voluma in the hands of a skilled injector can enhance one’s beauty by creating soft, feminine features they may not have possessed before.

3. What makes Juvéderm® Voluma XC different from other dermal fillers?

The cutting-edge Vycross technology is what sets Juvéderm® Voluma apart from other fillers. Due to the ratio of low to high molecular weight of the product, Juvéderm® Voluma allows for smooth, natural looking results that can last up to two years.

4. Is the treatment painful?

Juvéderm® Voluma is combined with Lidocaine a local anesthetic which makes the procedure very tolerable. Numbing cream or ice can be also be used to assure the patient is comfortable. Most patients report little to no pain at all when receiving Juvéderm® Voluma and other nonsurgical facial enhancements.

5. Can men be treated?

Men can achieve the same wonderful benefits as women with Juvéderm® Voluma XC. Because men have different cheekbone structure than women, it is important to seek a skilled provider who is familiar with facial anatomy and possesses an artistic eye.

6. Does Juvéderm® Voluma require any special training or techniques?

Yes, Juvéderm® Voluma requires advanced training with Allergan Cosmetics before a provider can inject Juvéderm® Voluma filler, however some providers do so without proper training and experience. Center for Facial Rejuvenation was proud to be tapped by Allergan as the first practice in the Chattanooga Area to offer Juvéderm® Voluma before it was commercially available due to their exceptional track record and client satisfaction.

7. Can you combine Juvéderm® Voluma with other treatments?

Many times combining Juvéderm® Voluma XC with other non-invasive treatments can render an even greater effect. By adding a small amount of BOTOX® to the procedure, one can even further soften and enhance the features of the face. Resurfacing facial skin with chemical peels such as PCA and VI Peel can help restore the luminosity that only boosts the effect of revolumizing the face with Juvéderm® Voluma.

8. How is the recovery?

Because Juvéderm® Voluma XC is injected with special needles or even blunt tip cannulas, most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately.

9. What are the common side effects of Juvéderm® Voluma XC?

Side affects are minor and are usually limited to mild swelling or bruising at the site of injection. At Center for Facial Rejuvenation we have our skilled aestheticians who will always offer a complimentary touch up at the CFR Cosmetic Bar.

10. What can be done to prevent bruising?

A caring provider will go to great lengths to ensure you do not bruise during your procedure. Ice, Arnica and a gentle technique are routinely used at the Center for Facial Rejuvenation. Also, discontinuing fish oils, NSAIDs and alcoholic beverages 2-3 days prior to treatment is always a good idea to reduce the chance of bruising. However, always check with your provider before discontinuing any medicines.

11. Can Juvéderm® Voluma be removed if I don’t like the results?

The best part about any of the Hyaluronic Acid Fillers like Juvéderm® and Juvéderm® Voluma is that they can be dissolved at any time with an enzyme called Hyaluranidase. Although it is rare for a client to wish to remove the filler, it is one of the advantages of the product.

Dermal Fillers Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are products that are injected into the dermis of the skin to subtly increase volume and soften folds and wrinkles of the face. The first dermal filler was approved by the FDA in 1981.

2. How do dermal fillers work?

Fillers are injected below the surface of the skin to volumize areas that have lost fat, muscle and bone. Also, fillers are an excellent tool to create slightly fuller lips, define a small chin or soften abnormalities of the nose.

3. What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

In the hands of a skilled practitioner, dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®, Perlane®, Radiesse® and Sculptra® can turn back the hands of time and give the face a more youthful look. By artistically “sculpting” the brows, cheeks, and lips one can actually become more attractive.

4. What are the risks of dermal filler injections?

Side effects of dermal fillers are usually mild and can range from redness, bruising, tenderness or swelling. Although exceedingly rare, infection is always a possibility. For maximum safety, fillers should only be injected by a highly qualified medical practitioner who has extensive training and experience.

5. What areas can be treated?

Fillers can be used to perform a liquid facelift for the aging face or just to increase one’s attractiveness.
• Lip enhancement
• Deep folds
• Facial lines
• Wrinkle correction
• Lip augmentation
• Facial contour shaping of the cheeks and as a temporary chin “implant” alternative
• Thin lines on the face and above the lips

6. How long does a dermal filler treatment last?

Fillers can last from 9-18 months based on the area they are used.

7. Can dermal fillers be used with other treatments?

Dermal fillers can be combined effectively with BOTOX® Cosmetic, laser treatments (such as Fraxel, Isolaz, Clear and Brilliant and Thermage) to further enhance the rejuvenation process. Also, BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments followed by a dermal filler is one of the most common combination treatments and can actually prolong the effects of dermal fillers.

8. Are dermal fillers just for women?

As of last year, 1 in 8 cosmetic procedures were performed on men. More and more men are realizing the benefits of facial rejuvenation to maintain their edge in a youth driven society. Over 300,000 men received “Brotox” in 2011 alone.

9. What can and can’t I do after the treatment?

Most clients return to work or normal activities right after a dermal filler treatment. Many dermal filler treatments such as the chemical facelift can be performed during lunch. A quick stop at the Jane Iredale Cosmetic touch-up bar will get you on your way looking better than when you arrived.

10. What is the best dermal filler for anti-aging?

There are many dermal fillers on the market to reverse the signs of aging. A free consultation with a qualified medical provider will determine which is right for the client. Due to the ease of injection and longevity, hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm® and Restylane® are frequently used in our office. Also, calcium hydroxyapatite filler, Radiesse® or a poly-L-lactic acid filler, Sculptra® are perfect for areas that need extra volume. Many times an expert injector will utilize multiple fillers for the perfect look.

11. Are dermal filler injections painful?

By seeking a medical practice whose number one concern is the patient’s safety and comfort, measures can be taken to lessen the discomfort of injections such as numbing cream, ice and anti-bruising gel. Also, blunt tip cannulas can decrease the discomfort and risk of bruising.

12. What is the best dermal filler to prevent post-filler lumpiness?

The best protection against post-filler lumpiness is a highly qualified medical provider who is familiar with all the nuances of dermal fillers and facial anatomy.

13. What is the best dermal filler for cheeks?

The cheeks typically need extra volume as the aging process depletes collagen, elastin and fat. Dermal fillers that have a larger degree of cross-linking (thickness) are best for this area such as Perlane® and Juvéderm®. Radiesse® and Sculptra® can also be effectively used in the cheeks. An exciting new dermal filler called Voluma by Allergan will soon be available as well.

The pendulum has swung and clients are demanding non-invasive, cost effective ways to naturally restore supple volume to the face. Dermal fillers are the answer to looking good quickly with no downtime.

Call today to schedule your free Visia Complexion Analysis and Consultation with a qualified medical professional. At CFR we will tailor a plan based on your concerns and facial anatomy and the walk with you for the life of your skin.
