Looking for another way to fight the aging process? Non-invasive advanced dermaplaning may be the key to beautiful, radiant skin. At the Center for Facial Rejuvenation, countless patients have found this form of deep exfoliation to be their best friend in achieving smooth skin and better makeup application.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a type of exfoliation procedure in which one of our facial rejuvenation specialists uses a sterile surgical scalpel to “shave” the skin’s surface. This removes the top-most layer of dead skin and fine vellus hair, popularly called peach fuzz. By the end of treatment, patients are left with smooth, exfoliated skin. The procedure lasts around 45 minutes and requires no downtime or recovery.
What Are the Benefits?
While the procedure has popularly been compared to shaving your face, dermaplaning is much more than a form of depilation. The physical exfoliation and removal of the top layer of dead skin cells plays a key role in triggering skin cell regeneration, making the new healthy skin more receptive to other treatments, including chemical peels. Ultimately, the use of dermaplaning as a predecessor to other treatments helps increase the effectiveness of these secondary treatments, allowing patients to enjoy the full potential of their procedure. We offer secondary treatments with advanced dermaplaning.
This artificial stimulation of the cellular regrowth cycle also plays an important role in helping improve the appearance of fine lines and scarring by concurrently triggering collagen regeneration.
Stimulating the cellular regrowth process is only one benefit that comes with this procedure. Another important advantage comes from the removal of the fine vellus hair. While peach fuzz may seem like more of an inconvenience than anything else, these ultrafine hairs often trap dirt and oil. By removing these thin hairs with a scalpel, patients can lower their chances of outbreaks as well as reduce the appearance of acne scars and fine lines.
Who is a Candidate for Dermaplaning?
As dermaplaning is a purely physical treatment and doesn’t require chemicals or lasers to complete, almost any patient is a candidate for this treatment. Often, the individuals who gain the most are patients with dry or rough skin texture or uneven skin tone. For these patients, regular dermaplaning every three to four weeks helps clear away excess dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of acne scarring. Patients starting to notice fine lines appearing also benefit from the regenerative aspect of this solution.
While the procedure can make facial exfoliation easy for some, not everyone may enjoy the same degree of results. For individuals with prone to oily skin or frequent acne breakouts, dermaplaning can irritate the skin and make it feel sore even after the procedure is over. Patients with excessive facial hair may also find the procedure doesn’t provide the desired results. While vellus hair typically grows back very fine, patients who have excessive facial fair may find themselves facing stubble, ingrown hairs or razor rashes. The best and safest way to receive this treatment is by visiting a medical professional.
