What Are Dermal Fillers?
Most signs of aging in the face—wrinkles, lines, and crow’s feet—can be reversed by targeting volume in specific areas. Dermal fillers, also called injectable fillers and soft-tissue fillers, are aesthetic products approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help add volume and shape a natural, youthful facial appearance. Only licensed physicians, physician assistants, and nurses can perform dermal filler injections in the US.
Dermal fillers are safe and convenient. They’re made with a base ingredient of hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen, or some type of biosynthetic polymer—all naturally occurring substances. They’re not permanent, but some will produce results that last more than a year.
What Can Be Treated with Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are used to add volume. They help the body deliver nutrients to the skin, which also helps skin retain moisture. With dermal fillers, we can restore softness and smooth out things like:
- Cheek depressions
- Deep lines from the nose to the mouth that show up as you get older
- Acne scars
- Frown lines
- Worry lines
- Crow’s feet
- Marionette lines
- Lip borders
For some, dermal fillers can be a part of their aesthetic treatment plan. For others, dermal fillers are all they need to get the results they want. They are a versatile line of beauty products well suited to reverse many visible signs of aging.
What’s It Like to Get a Dermal Filler Treatment?
One of the best things about using dermal fillers to add volume and smooth facial contours is how quick and easy the appointments are. Most will only last about a half hour or less. For many people, dermal fillers can be an affordable and convenient alternative to more invasive procedures. In fact, many of our patients in Chattanooga and Athens are able to go right back to work with visible results that will look even better in the coming weeks.
Skilled injectors like our medical director and nurses will administer your dermal filler, always with your comfort and safety as their top priorities. Some dermal filler products even contain a small amount of anesthetic to make your treatment more comfortable.
Juvéderm® XC is a smooth gel created from a naturally occurring substance found in our bodies called hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid provides hydration and volume to the skin. As we age, our bodies deplete this plumping agent and signs of aging become more visible in the face. Juvéderm® XC is indicated for the use of softening the lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Results are immediate and last up to 1-year post-injection. This injectable contains an anesthetic to minimize discomfort during treatment for a better overall experience.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC is an FDA-approved dermal filler that has a consistency similar to the original Juvéderm® XC. It’s slightly thicker and able to soften deeper lines and wrinkles in the face, such as the marionette lines (lines from the sides of the mouth to the jawline), deep nasal labial folds (lines from the corners of the nose to the sides of the mouth), and to fill in depressed areas of the cheeks. Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC is also a great option for adding definition and volume to the borders of the lips and the actual lips themselves. This injectable lasts up to 1-year post-injection.
Juvéderm® Voluma XC
Juvéderm® Voluma XC is the only hyaluronic acid filler that is FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area. It can last up to two years after your treatment. As time progresses, so does the hollowing and lack of volume in our face, creating sagging around the mouth and jawline. Juvéderm® Voluma XC was created to give volume under the skin, mimicking the fullness you had when you were younger. This creates a youthful appearance and instantly gives a more lifted and contoured look to the face. This injectable contains an anesthetic to increase your comfort during your treatment.
Juvéderm® Volbella is the latest FDA-approved injectable added to the family of Juvéderm® dermal fillers. Volbella is used to define lips and to smooth out fine wrinkles around the lips. This injectable contains a smaller particle of HA that makes injecting these fine lines and wrinkles easier, without adding unwanted volume to the lips. Volbella lasts up to 1 year for most clients.
Radiesse® is a volumizing dermal filler comprised of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHa), which is similar to the calcium found in your teeth and bones, suspended in a gel. Radiesse® is commonly injected in deeper folds of the face, such as nasal labial folds, marionette lines, acne scars, and sunken areas of the cheeks. Radiesse® has recently become one of the only FDA-approved dermal fillers to be used in the hands as a means to add volume and youthfulness. The CaHa acts as a scaffold to support your skin’s weakened structure and promote new collagen. Over a span of 2-3 years post injection, the CaHa is completely metabolized while new collagen grows in its place. The effects of Radiesse® can be seen immediately and can last 9-15 months.
Restylane® is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid specifically formulated to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid. This soft-tissue filler helps visibly correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including the lines that run from your nose toward the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) and the lines that run from the corners of your mouth toward the chin (marionette lines).
As skin loses elasticity with age, the lines that run from the sides of your nose toward the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) and the lines that run from the corner of your mouth toward the chin (marionette lines) appear more noticeable. Restylane® Refyne is a specifically formulated hyaluronic acid dermal filler made with XpresHAn TechnologyTM that helps correct these lines and shape a more natural look to your face. The unique cross-linking of the gel in Restylane® Refyne is also designed to help support your natural expression. It’s a wonderful injectable filler if you’re looking for real-life results that help maintain natural movement when you’re smiling, frowning, or puckering up.
One of the unfortunate signs of aging is increased skin laxity. Lines from the nose to the mouth and marionette lines will stand out more as skin loses its elasticity. Restylane® Defyne is crafted with XpresHAn TechnologyTM to add volume to deepened lines in your face. Similar to Restylane® Refyne, this dermal filler also uses a unique cross-linking technology in its gel to create natural-looking results and natural facial movements.
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable comprised of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a substance used by medical professionals for many years to act as a collagen stimulator. The filler works over time to help build new collagen, and the PLLA is slowly metabolized over time. Sculptra® is best suited for clients that struggle with significant volume loss in the temples, cheeks, and fine lines around the mouth. Clients will undergo a series of injections over the course of several months. Our aesthetic professionals evaluate each person’s response to each injection. Sculptra® Aesthetics typically shows results for at least 2 years.
